Saturday, July 25, 2015 – Reunion “Return to Pittsford Day” Picnic

After getting up a bit early to prepare my macaroni salad contribution to today’s picnic, we headed out to Powder Mill Park, arriving about 12:30, early, but wanted to help my friend Steve however I could. Turned out there wasn’t much to do, but a number of other people had come just as early, as the class of ’73 decided to make this their entire reunion, and they had a pretty good turnout. It wasn’t long before a bunch more of my old friends showed, and in particular, one friend who now lives in Dallas who I hadn’t seen since about 1977! We started talking, and all the years melted away. It truly is amazing, how friends are friends even after all these years! I was truly fortunate to have a great bunch of folks around me in high school, and now it looks like I might have them around me again as we all get older. Almost everyone seems to want to retire, get an RV and see the country, so I suggested a Pittsford-Mendon camping club, where we all meet at various campgrounds whenever. Wouldn’t be surprised if that happens someday! Had a great time, stayed around till nearly 7:00, and the rest of the gang were there another couple of hours, but with our long drive back to Caledonia, we wanted to be back by dark. A really great day!

Friday, July 24, 2015 – Dinner with Friends

Had a good night’s sleep, and spent most of the day relaxing until it was time to meet some friends at a nice Indian restaurant in Rochester. A lovely evening, getting caught of on the lives of old friends is a kick! One we had just seen in Cleveland last month, and the other was another friend from high school whom she always stays with when she’s in town. We had a great evening! Didn’t get back until around 10:00, but had to settle down a bit before heading off the bed. A lovely evening!

Thursday, July 23, 2015 – Travel Day to Caledonia

Had a long drive today, so we got a fairly early start, having to take one detour around a section of Route 104 that was supposedly closed. Grabbed lunch at Orbachers in Williamson, then took the long swing around Rochester to get to Caledonia, with several stops along the way. Arrived just after 5, and shortly before the ladies who were hosting us arrived. This is a really cute little farm, and though it has a variety of fenced off pastures, several were populated with alpacas, but no horses, even though they have been advertising on craigslist for a boarder. After some spirited discussion, Hubby and I managed to find a mutually agreeable place to park the RV, and the horses were put away in a very lush pasture where they naturally rolled and ran and had a great time exploring before settling down to the business of eating. This should be a great place for Clio to fatten up, though we'll have to keep an eye on them, this is much richer than anything else they've had for a while. Hubby got the satellite dish up in no time, and I ran Lola around a bit in a clearing behind us before settling in for a nice quiet evening.

Wednesday, July 22, 2015 – Rest and Prep

Spent the day getting ready to move out tomorrow, getting in the last of the laundry and generally putting stuff away.

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 – Laundry and Recovery Day

Spent the day catching up on laundry and recovering from our long ride yesterday. Hubby is very pleased that his back was pain-free, and didn’t even need to take any pain-killers, which is a great step forward health-wise. It’s been a long recovery since he got the flu back in February, with lots of setbacks in between, but he’s finally on the road to full recovery, yeah! At horse meal time, the gray gelding that was now only one stall away from my horses started making a fuss, kicking and squealing at my horses. I switched the mare for the gelding, thinking that might quiet him down, but no luck, the gray gelding kept misbehaving. Finally, I walked down to the owner of the two horses that are on the other side (the ones I had to move away from because there was no stall in between), and asked if they would mind moving over one, because of this ornery gelding, and they happily agreed. That made it a much quieter evening, thank goodness, and we had a calm evening.

Friday, July 17, 2015 – Shopping Day

Had to run into town today to pick up a few groceries, liquor, mail a letter, drop off trash, and run a few errands. We stopped at a dairy store (hiding behind a very large plastic cow), thinking we could get some frozen custard (a summertime favorite in the area), but it was mostly cheese and some other local farmers fare. We tested everything they had on their sample stands, and ended up buying some smoked Gouda and Coghlan’s ring Bologna, just couldn’t resist! Got back to camp in the afternoon, chatted with Marsha again for awhile, it seems they went into town and bought a couple more tubes for his sulky tires in the hopes that might solve the problem. Otherwise relaxed for the rest of the evening.

Wednesday, July 15, 2015 – More Writing and Water

Spent most of the day doing some writing, though I also cut Roy’s hair, which was LONG overdue, then with the help of our neighbor Marsha, put some water in our tank and hers, while several more trailers, two from Canada and one from Florida, joined us on our loop. Had conversations with everyone throughout the day. Marsha’s husband’s sulky blew out a wheel yesterday, and I helped her look for a replacement, to no avail, but she suggested that since the buggy was in operable, that maybe we could go for a ride on her two horses, since they are as inseparable as our two, and since Apollo’s back is hurt (he flinched a lot less when I touched it today, so he’s definitely getting better, but still needs to rest it, though I think it’s only bruised), I thought that was a great idea. Sat in our loungechairs and watched the world go by during cocktail hour, before settling down for the evening.

Tuesday, July 14, 2015 – Writing, with a Strange Start to the Day

As soon as I got up this morning and looked outside, something was wrong. Apollo was standing on the opposite side of the tie rail, on the outside of the stall. Upon closer examination, it became clear that somehow he got underneath the rail. He had a long scratch along the top of his back, and tufts of his hair were stuck on the bottom of the rail. I can only think he either laid down and then got up wrong, or was reaching so far for grass that is a yard or more away, that he jammed himself underneath. I cleaned the wound and sprayed it well with Vetericyn, and hoped for the best. He didn’t seem to have any other injuries, so I’ve got my fingers crossed. Meanwhile, we had a slow day, though I got a lot of essential writing done, thank goodness. When we fed the horses in the evening, when I touched Apollo’s back and he flinched badly. I examined him a bit more, and he only flinched on one particular point, though it wasn’t from the abrasion, it seemed more along the spine. I’m hoping it’s just a bruise, but we’ll look at it more closely over the next few days. Don’t think we’ll be doing any riding until he shows remarkable improvement. I sure don’t want to slap a saddle on a sore back! Settled down for the evening, with hopes for his improvement tomorrow!

Monday, July 13, 2015 – Runaround Day

After having a nice restful day yesterday, after breakfast today, we took a ride into Glenville to pick up my mail that had been forwarded, then Lowville for shopping at Tractor Supply, Walmart, and a quick lunch at a Chinese restaurant, mediocre but it did the job, got gas for the generator, and threw out an old vacuum cleaner that died on us and which we replaced today.

Thursday, July 9, 2015 – Travel to Otter Creek Horse Camp

Woke up around 8:00 and started getting ready to leave. Steve fixed another nice breakfast for us, and we were soon parting ways. We had a little trouble getting out of the loop, it was pretty narrow and I had to take a couple of stabs at it, but finally we made the corner and were heading up the road. It was only about a 90 minute drive on back roads to our next horse camp, Otter Creek, or actually, Independence River State Forest. Made one wrong turn, only because my GPS wanted to bring us in the south side instead of the north side, but we got back on track before we got into any trouble. Arrived at the campground and checked out all three loops, looking for a spot where Hubby thought he could get a satellite signal. Despite being a Thursday, the camp was about 40% full already, evidently some folks came for the 4th of July and stayed on. We managed to find the perfect spot in the first loop. We returned to the only water spigot with actual threads on it and filled up the freshwater tank before settling in, and we're close enough so that if we need to fill it again, we have enough hose to reach it, thank goodness. There's a closer spigot to the horses, but without threads, so it will be a bucket brigade for them. Got everyone settled in, and even got the satellite dish up in no time! Hubby was right about the angle, so now we're all happy campers! We were completely settled in by about 2:30 or so, really nice to get in this early. I spent some time in the afternoon writing, then grilled a London Broil I had started marinating yesterday afternoon for a lovely dinner, and settled down for the night.
