Friday, May 14, 2021 – Frustrating Ride on Apollo

Hi Sweetie,
NOTE TO SELF: Don’t ever come back to Wind Creek again! After another great night sleep and breakfast I saddled up Apollo for a short ride today. Since so many of the trails I’ve tried to take here have been impassable, I decided to not plan anything, just to go wherever I felt like. I know the place well enough now that I figured I couldn’t get lost. Unfortunately, even on the trails that you would think would be the most traveled, there were still dozens of trees down that had to be circumvented, some on hills that made getting around them very problematic. Many trails here are so narrow that you’re constantly having to push yourself away from trees (if you’re quick enough) to keep from knocking your knees. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough and banged up my newly repaired knee pretty good, both yesterday and today. You would think that a state park would have the resources to keep their trails clear, but these are as bad as the most neglected national forest I’ve ever been in. The only alternative are washed out gravel roads, which they also neglect, they could use some grading. Apollo was sluggish and not happy about the stones on the trails or the roads, I probably should have put boots on him, but they didn’t seem that bad to me, but he was really fighting the trail most of the way, making the whole experience unpleasant. We only went about 5.5 miles, but that was more than enough for us! Even Lola seemed bored, kept trying to wander off. Anyway, tomorrow I’ll take one more ride on Flash to the trails across the road, my notes from last time I was here indicate those are a little wider and hopefully a lot more pleasant. We’ll see. Grilled myself a nice piece of chicken, had rice and fruit salad, then settled down for the evening. Good news! I finally managed to persuade Equity into giving me a contract, so I should be back up and running on my health insurance and pension forthwith! Yay! Time for shower and bed, so good night, babe! Love you!

Thursday, May 12, 2021 – Nearly Ten Mile Ride on Flash

Hi Babe,
Had a very good night sleep, without earplugs! I haven’t had to use them since I got here, it’s nice and quiet, and now that I’m in Central Time, it seems it’s more in sync with mother nature and my circadian rhythm. Except a strange thing did happen. After I fed everyone including myself, I decided to wait a bit before heading out on my ride so that it would warm up. It was a very chilly morning, was glad I put my turtle neck on, but when I came back inside and sat in my chair and started reading, I nodded off and woke up almost two hours later! Yet I had had a good night sleep! I guess I must just still be releasing the pent up tension or something. Anyway, it was nearly noon by the time I went out and started saddling Flash, but soon we were off with Lola coming along as well. We started on a section of the yellow trail, which was very nice, as a lot of it follows the shoreline of the lake. Then I had planned on doing the blue trail, which looked like it also followed the shoreline, and there was a long section I hadn’t done before. Well, I didn’t get very far, there were so many trees down it became impassable. I had to double back and find another trail, and I finally found one that looked like it would also meet up with the blue trail later on, which it did, but it was also impassable! Honestly, if they’re not going to maintain their trails they should just close them so you don’t get a mile into them before being forced to turn back! I wandered around cross-country for awhile until I finally found another trail that was better, but it was not a pleasant experience for any of us for awhile! Saw some deer and birds, of course, and the weather warmed up beautifully, but it was spoiled a bit by the frustration of blocked trailes. We finally made it back to camp, and there were quite a number of new trailers that had and were still arriving, so I guess it’s going to be a busy weekend. I decided to fix the electric fence to a bunch of trees in the hope that Apollo couldn’t escape, and let them wander around in it a bit until it was dinnertime, then I put them on the highline, and put their blankets back on, since it’s going to be another chilly night. Thank goodness I have the electric fireplace for nights like this! Grilled myself an Angus burger for dinner, gave Lola some extra food since she went on the ride today, and settled down for the evening. Just saw a beautiful space station flyover, nice and bright and long, and now it’s about time to take my shower and get ready for bed! Good night, my darlin’! Love you!

Wednesday, May 11, 2021 – Taxes DONE!

Hi Darlin’!
YAY! Got my taxes done AT LAST! Whew! It was so complicated this year, what with selling the house and becoming widowed and everything else that happened last year, but I managed to get it done by noon. Meanwhile, because of the rain and the soft ground, Apollo pulled his old trick of pulling a couple of fence posts out with his teeth and escaping out into the campground with Flash in tow. I had to stop everything and go get them back, and I had to put them on a highline, which I really didn’t want to do because it is so muddy and if they stand in one place for long it will only get worse! It was so gloomy here this afternoon that the street light came on around 2:00 and stayed on all day. I’ve even been running my electric fireplace for heat because it’s been so wet and clammy and cold. It’s going down in the 40′ tonight! I put the light blankets on the horses this morning, Flash was shivering a bit when I fed them. Now they’re settled in as best as I can get them on a highline, though it’s going to be a muddy mess before long. Nothing else I can do if Apollo is going to do his Houdini impression! I decided I deserved the rest of the day off, and relaxed with a movie and popcorn. Got everybody settled in for the night, now it’s time for me to get to bed, too! Good night, sweetie! Love you!

Tuesday, May 10, 2021 – Shopping, Rain and a Bit of Taxes

Hey Babe,
Had to take a run down to a town about 30 miles away, it’s the only place I could find the horse feed for Apollo, then another quick stop at Walmart for just a couple of things, was back before noon. Worked a bit on my taxes, some rain came in, gave up on my taxes and settled down for the evening. Just a regular mundane day! Now it’s time for shower and bed! Love you, Darlin’! Good night!

Monday, May 9, 2021 – Travel Day to Wind Creek

Hi Darlin’!
Got up right on time and quickly finished packing up, with Apollo once again jumping into the trailer before I was ready for him, I had to back him out to close the partition, silly horse! Said goodbye to my new friends and headed off to Alabama by 8:30. Despite the dire forecast of severe weather, I only hit light rain for about 30 minutes, the rest of the time it was mostly cloudy, then the sun came out right about the time to arrived. Got checked in, then proceeded to the campground and decided to go to the top of the hill again, about where we were last time. It was a little muddy, so I had to be careful turning around (there’s not much room here to do that), and I cut around a couple of sites in order to accomplish that. Just as I was about to clear a water spigot (I was a good foot to a foot and a half away from it, so I was sure I was clear) but when my tire hit the edge of the concrete base, the whole thing sank into the mud and the spigot got jammed into my wheel well. I couldn’t get it loose no matter how hard I tried, so I ended up just dragging the whole darn thing out! Of course, that broke the pipe, so some water was coming out. I called the office and reported it, and within two minutes a whole crew came up to work on it. They had all the right equipment, driving up a big Deere shovel, and they had the whole thing repaired with a new spigot in less than an hour. Incredible! Glad they understood the nature of the accident (you could see my tire marks, it was unmistakable that I had cleared the spigot, just not the concrete, and who knew it would move like that?), so no worries. It didn’t take me too long to get everyone settled in. I put up the electric fence for the horses in the woods so they would have more room instead of a highline like the last time we were here, got out Lola’s GoDogGo machine and filled her swimming pool with water, so she went fetch crazy for a long time. Got the grill out as well so I could have a nice little steak tonight, and was sitting out under the awning in no time, looking like I’d been here a week! A nice couple drove up, Pam and Mal, who live locally but had only day-ridden here, never camped, but wanted to check out the campground for the future. They work at a local stable that has access to 100 miles of trails, but with no campground, would you believe! They loved my trailer (what’s not to love?), and we chatted for quite a while, very nice. After they left I fired up the grill, had my dinner, fed everyone else, and settled down for the evening. Of course, I gained an hour after coming into Central time (which I like much better at this time of the year), but I’m tired from the long day, so I’m heading to bed and shower, seemingly early, but right on time with my body clock. So, I’m off! Goodnight, my sweet! Love you!

Sunday, May 9, 2021 – Busy Prep Day

Hi Sweetie!
What a busy, busy day! It seemed like there was no end to the little jobs that had to be done. I did my best to space them out, but even so, it seemed like I would never get them all done. Of course, I did a load of laundry, had to get the sheets and whites done. The first day I got here, I decided to change the water filter, and was absolutely appalled at the state of it, it seemed like it was full of leaves, but it had to be algae, but very firm. It turns out, the overflow of the fresh water tank was filled with the same stuff! I have no idea how that could have happened, since it’s two totally different systems, but it does explain why I had so much trouble filling up the fresh water tank at St. Sebastian, no air flow in the overflow means the water kicks back from the main water line. Anyway, that must have taken me nearly an hour to completely clear out, I almost had reached the point where I thought I would have to take off the permanent clamp to get it clean, but I managed to squeeze the line enough and put enough water pressure on it to force it all out. Whew! Then I put in a bunch of bleach to sanitize it and all the water lines, then I flushed the black water tank about five or six times to get it completely clean, something I haven’t had the opportunity to do since before I hit the road last year. I packed up all the extraneous stuff and cleaned out the stalls, figuring I’d leave the horses in the paddock tonight so I won’t have stall cleaning in the morning. Did some housework as well, just so I wouldn’t carry old dirt to a new place, though it wasn’t exactly a thorough job today. Did my PT exercises and finally got to the point where I could ice my knee for a bit. I went down to the office to arrange for payment, and several trailers were just coming in, and I ended up spending the evening with these newcomers (everyone else had left this morning), even had a chance to do my Snowy River performance, which was very well-received, they were very appreciative. I may have a slight change in plans based on a recommendation they made, which will take me to a new place rather than an old one, but still keep me in line for Loretta Lynn’s on time. Even sold a few copies of my book to them as well! Everything is as packed as it can be at this point, the truck is lined up for tomorrow, though I’m not level enough to actually hook up at the moment, but I should be able to get out of here on time in the morning. There’s some rain in the forecast, but it seems really scattered, so I’m not going to worry about it. The weather forecast hasn’t exactly been too accurate lately, and a little rain won’t hurt anything. Just have to drive carefully, which I do anyway. Anyway, I’ve had my shower, I’m off the make the bed and then get in it! Love you, babe! Good night!

Saturday, May 8, 2021 – A Nice Fourteen Mile Ride on Flash

Hi Babe,
Another cool, lovely morning today, and I did have to close the windows in the bedroom last night, it did get quite chilly in the wee hours! Had a relaxing morning, then finally got around to saddling up Flash for our last ride here today. I’ve slowly been getting all of their feet trimmed, and today was the last two, the rear ones on Flash. I’ve had that horse for what, three years now? And this is probably the first serious trim I’ve done on him, his back feet just don’t seem to grow hardly at all! But they had finally got some length to them, so I trimmed them today before heading out. Of course, I had the best of intentions to try to find some of the trails I missed last time we were out, and maybe I found a few, maybe not. It’s hard to tell sometimes because the maps is just so darn bad, at least as far as being GPS accurate. The trails aren’t that well marked either, so it was a challenge, but we managed nonetheless. Flash was in a gogo mood again after he warmed up, and we got some fabulous cordos and largos in, and a couple of long stretches of canter as well. There are quite a few areas here that have been logged so they are wide open, and they did a lot more trail tilling on this side this week. I don’t remember having that problem on Tuesday, but there sure were a lot of trails torn up today! I guess they’re refurbishing their fire breaks of something. Saw a black cat on the trail, that’s the second cat I’ve seen out here. Seems strange, as they were a long way from any houses, so maybe they’re just feral. Anyway, it was a lovely ride, with a great finish along the river, and a quick stop at the obstacle course, where I was finally able to get Flash up this one obstacle he’s been reluctant about, but managed to do today, yay! Then we had a nice long canter on the final field for home, and ended on a very positive note. Rinsed Flash off and put him back in the stall, which my neighbors Jerry and Bonnie had kindly fixed yesterday. The pipe panel on one side was a rusted piece of junk, an accident waiting to happen, and he put a new panel that he found laying around in yesterday, so it was much better now! Very grateful for that! Chatted with them for a bit (I actually ran into them three times on the trail as well!) before grilling a steak and settling down for the evening. Now I’m off to shower and bed, with another beautiful cool night coming up. Good night, darlin’! Love you!

Friday, May 6, 2021 – Shopping and a Ride

Hi Darlin’,
Woke up to a cooler morning than I’ve experienced in quite a while, a gorgeous start to the day! Got the animals and me fed, then headed out to Live Oak to pick up a couple of bales of coastal and the local feed store, MUCH BETTER than that dusty crap I bought in Fellsmere! Just three bales though, since I still have four of the other stuff left, though I’m thinking about using it more for bedding than eating, it’s that bad. Then went to Walmart, took Lola with me, she made lots of people smile, as always. The governor of Florida lifted the facemask restrictions yesterday, and I forgot my mask in the truck and didn’t want to go back for it, and I saw a lot of other people without masks today, so I decided to go in without one. After all, I’ve been vaccinated, right? It’s time for things to start getting back to normal! It was the first time in nearly a year that I’ve been shopping without a mask, and there was a definite feeling of freedom and progress in that. Did all my shopping, topped off the fuel tank in the truck since our next trip on Monday will be almost a tankful, then got back to camp around noon. I eventually saddled up Apollo and planned a route to another section of the Twin Rivers Forest across the road from McCulley Farms, and it wasn’t long before I got lost, because the map is hand drawn (and therefore not even close to my GPS track) and the trails weren’t particularly well marked (well, there were plenty of marks on the trees, they just didn’t seem to correspond very well with what was on my map), and in the end, I just let Apollo figure it out and take us back to camp. It was a pretty boring ride, and the one section that I thought looked like it might be really nice had evidently recently been burned (assuming it was a prescribed burn), so one side of the trail was really ugly after all. A lot of the trail had been recently tilled up as well, so we were walking in deep sand and furrows, so not much fun. In fact, the nicest trail was the one Apollo turned onto, which wasn’t marked but headed in the right direction. I had planned on about a seven mile ride, it ended up being ten, so my legs were tired trying to hang onto that big fat boy! I didn’t take Lola because there’s too much of a crowd in camp now, and it required crossing the road a couple of times, didn’t want the hassle. Got back and put Apollo in the little pasture with Flash for a few hours, grilled a sausage for dinner, then got the boys back into their stall before calling it a night. A beautiful evening, and it’s supposed to get down into the upper 40’s tonight, great sleeping weather! I may even have to close the windows so it won’t get too cold! Nice change! Anyway, ready to shower and bed. Good night, Sweetie! Love you!

Thursday, May 5, 2021 – More Time on Taxes, Still Not Done

Hi Babe,
What a nightmare! I spent a good portion of the day trying to work out the problems with my taxes, did a bunch of housekeeping on my bookkeeping program, and am still not much further ahead than I was yesterday. I’m giving it a rest, though, since the two days of “rain” in the forecast lasted about two minutes this morning and the rest of the weekend looks beautiful. More rain forecast next week at my next destination, so I’m going to try it again then. I do need to go shopping tomorrow in the morning, but I’m going to try to ride Apollo in the afternoon, then ride again over the weekend. Did my PT again, like yesterday, trying to get back on a daily schedule if I can, it really makes a difference if I can do it. Been icing down my knee regularly in the evenings, too, hoping to get the last of the inflammation and pain out of there. Getting very tired of having pain in my leg! The owner here let me put the horses in a nice big grassy paddock for the day, they appreciated being out of the stall (they were stuck in there all day yesterday). I tried to dig up some chaney roots, but they’re so thick and deep I can’t seem to even reach them! I may try again later, but I’m beginning to think the easy diggings at Jeff’s was a fluke, I can seem to find any that easy to dig up anywhere else. Oh, well, it was worth a try. Might just need a bigger shovel :-). Anyway, I’ve had it for the day, I’m off for my shower and bed. Good night, hon! Love you!

Wednesday, May 5, 2021 – Started on Taxes

Hi Sweetie,
Well, because there was a forecast calling for an abundance of rain today, I made plans to work on my taxes, with the hope that I could finish it today. Unfortunately, neither thing happened. It didn’t rain, and in fact the morning was one of the loveliest you could imagine, not a cloud in the sky and the perfect morning temperature. It did cloud up somewhat later, but not a drop of rain came down. Glad I don’t make my riding decisions based on the weather forecast! I got to work on the taxes, but it is so complicated for last year I was nowhere near finished by day’s end. Between me becoming a widow, selling the house, and the stupid covid stuff, everything just seems impossible. There’s actually a rule that all of the depreciation on the house that we’ve taken since May 6, 1997 has to be recalculated and have taxes paid on it as if it were income, down to the exact number of days from then until now. Can you believe that? Who keeps track of stuff that happened 20+ years ago! What a nightmare! I just hope that I can get it finished tomorrow, I sure don’t want to drag this all out. Grrrrr! Anyway, the horses stayed in all day because I didn’t want to be distracted by making sure they didn’t wander off, so they’re probably as grumpy as I am by now. Put me in the mood for wine, which I haven’t had for weeks, but you know how that goes… Enough of this day, time for shower and bed. Good night, my darling! Love you!
