After several days of rest and relaxation, which was about the only thing we (and the weather) were good for this week, we finally decided we were fit enough to get a ride in. Got the horses saddled up and ready to go, let the dogs out and headed north, to an area of the park we've never been. We started out wrong, though, because I used an overlay map to plot a course that took us on to a road, which I couldn't tell from the map, and in order to avoid the road, we took the first trail we came to, which turned out to be a hiking/walking trail, not a horse trail, but we weren't on it long before meeting up with an official horse trail. We turned north on Chase Creek Trail until we reached High Banks, a wonderful little trail that evidently hadn't had much traffic lately, and that made it even more pleasant. The trail was dirt with some pine roots across it, but only a few muddy spots, incredible considering it rained almost all night last night, sometimes very heavy, but it had mostly drained away, which is one of the things I like about these trails. About halfway around that loop there's a nice scenic area with a picnic table and a hitching post right next to a river, where we stopped and had a quick lunch, while the dogs frolicked in the water and the horses rested at the rail. Before long we were headed out again, after giving the horses a couple of apples as a treat, then climbed back up the ridge until we started heading south again. This time we stayed on Chase Creek Trail until it became Confusion Flats, which brought us straight to Blue Jog Trail and the final leg home. We had one group of three women pass us going in the other direction and a couple that we let pass us on the way home. Apollo was fantastic all day until the last straight line home, when I asked him for a canter and he wanted to give me a runaway gallop. When I tried to slow him down he got a little fussy, he obviously really wanted to run, but I managed to finally slow him down with a one-rein (almost) stop, then jogged him the rest of the way just to get him listening again. One of these bright days I'm going to have to get him in an arena and lope the heck out of him until he learns he can actually run slowly, something he apparently doesn't know yet. My fault, of course, no excuses! Got back to camp exactly 4 hours after we left, got the horses back on their highline, started the generator (it's after 4:00, of course :-), and began our evening. A perfect day, perfect temperature at 70 degrees (precisely what we're constantly searching for!), perfect trails, a wonderful day!

Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015 – Rest Day at Otter Creek

Despite my exhaustion last night, I had a hard time getting to sleep, and I woke up a couple of times during the night. By the time I got up, though, it was almost nine, so I flew out to put the generator on, because one hour was not going to be enough to charge the batteries. I was planning on doing laundry here, but with me not able to use the generator before 4:00 (really?), and with the forecast saying rain this afternoon, I figured it probably won’t be today. Sure enough, rain came in late in the afternoon. We put out every bucket we had, plus the rain barrels, as we’re a long way from any water spigots, and I’d rather not carry water any farther than I have to. They all managed to get filled up during the storm, thank goodness. Spent most of the day just reading before settling down for the evening.

Monday, Aug. 17, 2015 – Travel Day to Otter Creek near Watertown, NY

I woke up almost an hour before the alarm, so I got up and started to do some prep work. Once Hubby got up, we had breakfast and started moving. I had to take a side trip back to the cottage to relieve them of any leftovers they didn’t want to take, and to say good-bye. Got back and started packing in earnest, but we had put up a portable fence that needed to be taken down, plus we still had vehicles to hook up, and general packing to do, so just as we were getting ready to pull out, my brothers left just ahead of us. Finally got on our way around 10:30, only stopping for fuel, Walmart and Tractor Supply. Arrived at the campground around 2:00, but discovered everywhere we usually park was full. While I was at the dump station, and then to the only spigot that has a hose hookup available (which, stupidly, requires you to block the road for the duration of your fillup) Hubby circled all three loops, and the only one he thought posible was a spot that someone was “saving” for someone else, though technically that’s not allowed. But who wants to start an argument with a new neighbor? Anyway, we finally settled on what I think is an ADA site (we have a placard for Hubby), tucked in the woods at the mouth of the entrance, and after we agreed to it, Hubby realized it might just be good for a satellite signal anyway, once he mustered the energy. We were as far from the stalls as we could get, and they all appeared to be full, so we decided to highline the horses behind us in the woods. We were working in first gear, barely able to move we were so tired, so we took our time, one slow step at a time. Eventually we got everything out, but a camper came by and told us that they probably wouldn’t allow us to keep our horses highlined, at least not at night, and the best thing to do was just tell the ranger that they would only be there during the day in order to be close by for riding. Can’t understand why they would care about high lines, they’re the safest method for containing a horse there is! So much more freedom for the horse! Anyway, we settled in for the evening, finally putting the generator on just after seven. Then, just after eight, a woman came to the door to inform us that there was a new rule saying generators can’t be run past 8:00 at night, even though quiet time didn’t start until 10! I never heard that one before! We had hardly started charging our batteries, so I don’t know how long they will last, and frankly, I still heard other generators going on in other loops, so I’m not sure what the big deal is. Anyway, I waited about 10 more minutes before shutting it off, then I got a copy of the rules and learned that generators are only supposed to operate from 8-10 am and 4-8 pm. That’s going to make it hard for me to get my laundry done! I’ve never felt such tension in this place before, these rules and the ranger that enforces them are really making this a much less pleasant place to visit, I’m sorry to say. If they harass us too much, we may have to choose an alternative. I’m a believer that rules should be common sense, and should be left to the people who are inhabiting the campground to decide. If everyone’s dogs get along, then why do we need to keep them leashed every minute of the day? If there’s no one in camp because they’re all out riding, why can’t I run a generator? If horses prefer to be on a highline, then why do they all have to be in stalls? I should also point out that the ADA site is the site FARTHEST from the bathhouse, FARTHEST from the stalls, FARTHEST from the mounting ramp, FARTHEST from the manure pile, in fact, FARTHEST from every amenity, which, I believe, is actually a violation of the ADA to begin with. But let’s not get picky with the rules, shall we?

Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015 – Another Two Rides

Brother Jeff came by again for a ride today, and brought his traveling companion’s granddaughter with him, so I ended up taking both of them for a ride, Jeff first, then Kendra. All told I was out almost four hours, even though it was only about 5.25 miles. Once we put the horses away, we headed over to the cottage for more food, with Jeff grilling everything he had bought on his arrival and hadn’t eaten yet. We pigged out on that, and afterward it wasn’t long before people were nodding off. We left about 6:00, and were so tired we could barely move the rest of the evening. Ordinarily we would be preparing for our departure tomorrow, but we’re both too tired to move! At least we don’t have to do any cooking or cleaning tonight!

Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015 – East Bay Picnic and Brother Jeff’s Birthday Ride

After breakfast, brother Jeff walked down, and we saddled up the horses and took a nice little tour around the farm. They apparently had a Trail Challenge a few weeks ago, so the trails had been freshly managed and fairly well marked, though it was more circling the perimeter of fields and orchards than it actually was in the woods, though the section that was in the woods was very nice. We even had a little creek crossing, which made for a nice change, and we had to sample an apple as we passed through the orchard, of course! A very nice ride, no drama, very pleasant. Got back in enough time to get ready and head out to the annual East Bay picnic, though we had to take a detour to my brothers’ friends cottage to drop off the cake, and stop at the Big M in Wolcott to pick up a few other things, plus some wine at the liquor store, before finally arriving at the picnic just before 4:00. Spent most of the time with family and friends, and pigging out on more food than a human should be capable of eating at one sitting (including steamed clams, which I haven’t had since the last time we were in NY four years ago), before heading back over to the friends house on the lake. There we looked for the ISS (International space station) flyover (which the neighbors on both sides enjoyed as well) and for meteors showering, as they have the perfect location to view that particular celestial event. Got home around ten, tired from a very busy week, and it’s not over yet!

Friday, Aug. 14, 2015 – More Reunions with Family and Friends

Slept late after the late night last night, so we didn’t get the ride in that brother Jeff wanted to go on, which we postponed until tomorrow. Headed out around noon to meet the cousins at Barry’s Old School and had a delightful lunch with them, as well as daughters and granddaughters. After several hours, they left and we hung around another hour before heading out to Proiretti’s Italian restaurant just a mile or so away, where my brothers had arranged for some old friends to meet us. We enjoyed visiting for another couple of hours before heading back to Sodus, stopping at Wegmans to pick up a birthday cake for brother Jeff for tomorrow.

Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015 – Family Day

Finally had a day with the family, sort of, though a number of friends of my brothers were also invited. We grilled white hots and sausages, I went kayaking all the way out the inlet and back again, got Lola swimming a bit, had a meal, and ended up playing Euchre, winning two out of three with friend Pat as my partner. Shut it down around midnight, tired from the long day.

Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015 – Rest Day

Thought we would be spending the day with the family, but at the last minute, Jeff decided to take our niece and his friends over to Niagara Falls, as they had never been. This would allow him to pickup our final brother at the airport after his flight arrives at 11:00 tonight on their way back. This gave us another day to rest and relax, which suits us just fine!

Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015 – Van Repair and Shopping Day

Had to set the alarm for early this morning, as we had an appointment at Ferrel’s garage to get the air condition on the van done. Apparently when they did the body work in Tennessee, they didn’t tighten down a bent transmission cooler, and it’s been banging on the new air condenser for the last few months, until it finally punched a hole in it. We took both vehicles so that we could do some running around while the van was being fixed, and we were fortunate that the weather had cleared up so the hay wouldn’t get wet. After dropping off the van we headed out to IHOP for breakfast, then Walmart to do some shopping, then we decided to head out to the place we’re planning on having lunch with a couple of our cousins on Friday, Barry’s Old School Irish Pub in downtown Webster. Turned out to be quite a nice place, with some outdoor seating, though a bit crowded on the inside, but lot of great Irish beer on tap, which I know will make my brothers happy. Just had a beer there while looking at the menu, and confirmed with the owner that we would be coming on Friday. Headed back to the shop just as they were working up the bill, got that paid and headed back to Sodus, just as my brother and his friends was leaving to go somewhere, so no family get together tonight!

Monday, Aug. 10, 2015 – Travel Day to Sodus Bay

As promised(?), I cooked breakfast for everyone, which disrupted our usual packing up time, plus we wanted to change the tire out on the trailer (which I hinted at my brother for help several times, but he characteristically ignored), and they were gone by the time we finished cleaning up the kitchen. Then we had problems with the bottle jack and had to abandon the whole thing anyway. Fortunately, our travel time is less than two hours today, so our late 10:30 departure wasn't going to be a problem, except there was rain coming in the afternoon that we wanted to miss. Our next stop is the Cracker Box Palace Animal Sanctuary near Wolcott, which happens to be about a mile south of where my brother Jeff has rented a cottage for a week, and where many of our family reunion events are bound to happen. When we arrived, we found a woman named Elaine who led us to the spot they had picked out for us, a corner of their hay field where they had put up three small pipe corrals. After a little consultation, we found a spot that was quite level with just a few boards under the wheels, and it didn't take long to get settled in. The grass inside the pens was quite long, so the horses were happily chomping in no time. We managed to miss the rain while driving up here, but just after we got settled in, the sky opened up and we were in a deluge for the rest of the afternoon and evening. My brother arrived just after sunset, stopping by for a few minutes to chat before heading out to his rented cottage, and we settled down for the night.
