Tuesday, September 22, 2026 – Day Seven in Peru, Sixteen Miles on Trail, Late Train to Aguas Caliente

Hi Darlin'! Whew, what a day this turned out to be! I'm running out of adjectives to use! We started off driving to where we left the horses last night, having mostly packed an overnight bag (thank goodness for my new carryon purse!), and were soon heading out on the trail. For some reason, they switched saddles on my horse, apparently there's a new guy, so I had to get my stirrups readjusted. Anyway, we spent much of the traversing country roads, passing fields with lots of livestock, through a couple of towns (right down the middle of the street), stopped for lunch from a gorgeous view on top of a hill overlooking a lake, then continuing on until we arrived at the next hacienda where the horses will be staying for two nights. We mostly walked, but during the last half hour, probably because we were on a tight schedule, we were able to do quite a bit of gaiting, which I was very happy about. The gate is more comfortable than the walk, but nothing is as smooth as my Flash! I am so spoiled with that horse! I realize that even more now, since comparing him to the thoroughbred crosses in Africa was apples and oranges, but with Peruvian pasos, it should be a better comparison, but it really isn't. They are still much smoother than a regular, ungaited horse, but still nowhere near my Flash! Anyway, we arrived back at the hotel, showered and finished packing for our overnight excursion, drove over to chef Marcella's house for a quick dinner, then off to the train station for our 8:50 train to Aguas Calientas, which is the town next to Machu Picchu. The trip took about two hours, and we were met by a guide at the station, who walked us up several steep streets to a hotel there, arriving around 11:45. Straight to bed, though it took awhile to get to sleep. Another long day tomorrow! Good night, sweetheart! Love you!
