Tuesday, September 17, 2024 – Rainy Ride Day

Hiya Sweetie!
Had a great night sleep, probably because I had to put earplugs in because of the rain. It's usually very quiet out here this early in the week, but the remnants of a tropical storm came in late and it rained nonstop all night, and was still raining this morning. I kept watching the weather and the radar, and they said it would quit about 11:30, but it was still drizzing at 12:30 when I started to saddle up. I couldn't wait any longer or I would run out of time. Our task today was the 12.5 mile Medium Blue trail, which I'm happy to say was impeccably marked. I only had one issue with some holes by the little bridge near the north end of the field, which I let the trailmaster know about. Flash was very slow today, I think the slippery footing was bothering him, and it never did quit raining, though it was just a fine mist for most of the day. I layered up and topped it off with my whitewater rain suit, but was still getting a bit chilled by the end of the day when we got home at 5:00. I put his rain sheet in the dryer because it had gotten soaked through during the night, and gave him plenty of feed and hay. I was glad this morning that I had put his blanket on last night, he was shivering when I was saddling him up this morning. Settled down to a late evening, but managed to get in a fun movie with Paul Hogan. Looking forward to a drier day tomorrow, fingers crossed! Good night, baby! Love you!

Monday, September 16, 2024 – Travel AND Ride Day!

Hey Babe!
Busy day today! Woke up and finished packing, got Flash loaded up and was on our way to the Biltmore just after 9:00. Had a wonderfully uneventful drive, and for the first time EVER, I got all the way through Knoxville with NO CONSTRUCTION! That's a first! I did run into a short section of road works right at the border to NC, but other than that, it was a breeze. Arrived pretty much on schedule, got all the way back to the volunteer parking, and discovered that unlike the last time I came here (when it was empty), today it was packed with day riders and some campers. I managed to move around and get a perfect spot, right next to the washrack so I can easily get water, and not too far back on the grass, because they're calling for a lot of rain this week (tropical storm on the coast), and I wanted to stay near the gravel. I decided I had better get the trail checking done before I got everything set up, so I got Flash out and got him saddled and we were on the trail just after 2:00, which was exactly my plan. Our first trail check for the new Green trail being used for a Ride and Tie on Friday, and the markings were all perfect except for the very end, which, after bringing it to the trail master's attention, will be fixed. Only had a few branches to trim back and one limb to be moved off the trail, other than that, the trail was fine. A lot more gravel than we like, but that's just the way it is here at the Biltmore. Flash was crying for Apollo the whole time I was tacking him up, and he's still doing it now, well into the evening. I knew he would be upset, but it just didn't make sense to make all the extra work when it wasn't necessary. We got back before 4:00, and I went about getting his fence up so I could put him away. He was pretty tired with all the travel, riding and crying for Apollo, so once he got into his paddock, he crashed for a little while. Got completely finished with setting up right at 5:00, including solar panel, though I doubt I'll get much sun with all the rain in the forecast. Looks like a lot of days riding in my rain suit! No worries, that's what I signed up for! Had dinner, managed to get a good enough cell phone signal for a couple of Farscapes, ready for an early bedtime tonight! Love you, darlin'! Good night!

Sunday, September 15, 2024 – Laundry, Housekeeping, Shopping and Packing

Hi Darlin',
A typical "day before I move on" scenario, doing laundry, housekeeping and some packing, though I also took a quick trip into town to drop off a letter and pick up a couple of things I missed when I shopped the other day. I didn't want to wait until I got to the Biltmore, as shopping there is pretty far away, relatively speaking. Linda was kind enough to let me use her Jeep so I wouldn't have to unhook my truck from the trailer, so I put a little gas in it as a thanks. Otherwise, a fairly uneventful day. Since I'll be coming back here, I've decided to leave Apollo here tomorrow. It will be a lot less work taking care of just one horse while I'm there, and Apollo will have plenty of room to stretch out in the big pasture he's in, though I know Flash will be a bit upset about it, but there will be plenty of horses around in the next few days to keep him company, and it's only for a week. I won't have time to ride Apollo anyway, so he'll get more exercise here. Having my tea and cookies, won't be long out of bed! Good night, sweetheart! Love you!

Saturday, September 14, 2024 – Mostly More Of The Same

Hiya Sweetie,
Spent another morning waiting to see if the mechanic would show up, finally decided to check on it ourselves. I first started to try to jack up the trailer with the bottle jack, but the ground was so soft the board kept sinking. Finally I had to connect the truck and run it up on the Jiffy Jack. We had a heckuva time trying to get the lugs loose, we ended up needing a long breaker bar to accomplish it, my impact wrench, despite being a very strong one, just couldn't get three of them off. I tried another tire later, and nothing moved on that one either. Somebody obviously went way overboard when they tightened these lugs the last time! About the only thing that got accomplished from a couple of hours messing around with it was that I confirmed that even though power was getting to the brakes, it wasn't activating the drums at all, and also learned where the correct hole is for the wires to go in (the last guy put them through the brake adjustment hole, would you believe!). I thought about changing it myself, but after watching a couple of videos decided I didn't have the right tools to do the job, so I'll let it go for now. Rather disappointing, I was really hoping we could get it done this week, but no go! On the plus side, Linda knows a place that specializes in trailers about 25 miles away, and she's offered me accommodations if they have to keep it overnight, so I'm going to try to get an appointment for the week after Biltmore and come back here, which at least temporarily solves my problem of where to go after Biltmore! Got everything back together and tools put away just before some rain came it, so I settled down to an afternoon of reading and movies. Getting close to bedtime now, so good night, baby! Love you!

Friday, September 13, 2024 – Another Day of Waiting, But Got A Ride In On Apollo

Hi Babe,
A great night sleep, thank goodness, but it was another long day of waiting with no results. I did manage to get a ride in on Apollo, just around some trails that Linda has cut through a small WMA next door to her farm. Only went just over three miles, but at least it gave him a chance to stretch his legs, and to give Lola a good walk. I spent most of the afternoon trying to sort out where I want to go after Biltmore, but without brakes on the trailer, I'm loathe to go anywhere up in the mountains, and in this part of the country, that's where most of the horse camps are, so I've been doing a bunch more research to try to figure it out. Found some new information, but still have no clue where to go yet. Hopefully I'll figure it out over the weekend! Not much else to report, except I trimmed Apollo's feet and received the new fly masks I ordered from Chick's Saddlery. Trying to get to bed early again tonight, it worked last night, hope it will again tonight. Even if this mechanic doesn't show up tomorrow, I think Linda and I are going to do a few experiments to see if we can narrow it down. We'll see. Anyway, good night, my darlin'! Love you!

Thursday, September 12, 2024 – Quiet Day of Waiting

Hiya Darlin',
Not a good night sleep, woke up in the middle and couldn't sleep for a long time, finally went out and didn't wake up until after 9:00. I seriously have to get to bed earlier and get my circadian rhythm back! Today a local mechanic was supposed to come out, so I didn't take a ride on Apollo like I had hoped to, did a couple of repairs like zip-tying the front bumper on the truck (my previous repair with nut and bolt didn't work) and fixing the water filter which was leaking pretty bad. I remember you put on this elaborate plumbing attachment because we didn't think a garden hose would fit in it, but today, I took that all off and DID manage to get a garden hose on it, and it works fine now, no leaks! I finished off a few things prepping for the Biltmore work next week, then tried to find a leak I have in the slide-out that I was hoping I could find when it started to rain a bit, but still haven't found it. It didn't rain very hard or for very long, guess I'll have to keep searching! Waited all day for the mechanic, but he turned out to be a no-show, for today at least. Apparently, he works on the local school buses and two broke down today, so he couldn't come. Spent the rest of the day just killing time, reading, playing computer games, watching a movie, etc. I'm determined to get to bed early tonight, so tea is already made and I'll be doing my Spanish lesson, taking my shower, and going to bed forthwith! Good night, sweetie! Love you!

Wednesday, September 11, 2024 – Shopping Day

Hi Sweetie!
A great night sleep, slept late, really felt rested today. After morning chores and breakfast I headed into Cleveland to do some shopping. Picked up a bag of feed and a new manure rake at Tractor Supply, dropped off that package to Amazon that had the wrong component in it, had a much needed haircut, was surprised to find a place that sold frozen custard, so I had to stop in and get a cone. Been looking for custard places up north all summer, who'd of thunk I would find one in rural Tennessee? It was delicious! Filled up with fuel for just $3.15/gal., cheapest I've paid in ages, and finally finished off at Walmart for just a few items I needed, though, of course, I bought more than what I went in for, as usual. Got back to the farm and spent the rest of the afternoon working on trail maps at the Biltmore for my trail checking next week. They're using quite a few different trails than in the Spring ride, so it should be a lot of fun! I managed to create a .gpx file for every trail except one, which was overlooked in the packet of maps that were sent to me, but finally got it late in the evening and was able to finish off that prep work. Settled down for the evening after I gave the horses a couple of apples (I'm trying to get them in the habit of coming down to the gate, but they can't seem to hear me across this big pasture!), soon ready for shower and bed! Good night, baby! Love you!

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 – First Ride in Cherokee National Forest

Heya Babe!
Had a good night sleep, and was up before the alarm, and just managed to have breakfast and catch Flash by 7:30. Got him saddled up and loaded onto the trailer right at the required hour of 8:00. I hadn't realized just how big the pasture was, they were all the way over on the other side and I had to walk over to where they could see me over a ridge before they would come over for breakfast. We had a long drive out into the Cherokee National Forest, and even further until we reached the Ocoee Wildlife Management area, which was true wilderness. As is always the case with Linda, riding with her did not disappoint! The main purpose of the ride was to finish clearing a loop that has been hit so bad by winds that countless trees have fallen down, and they've been cleaning it up in stages. The original plan was to do the final couple of miles, which had previously been approached from both directions, with the middle being the only part remaining to be cleared. Well, that was the intent, anyway. Turns out that bunches of NEW trees had fallen and blocked the trail, even in areas where they had cleared only a few weeks ago! The result was a very long and tiring day, and it still didn't end up being completely done. Though we were on the trail by 9:45, we didn't get back to the trailer until 5:35. It was pretty much non-stop clearing along the way, so I'm exhausted! By the time we got back home, I barely had enough energy to give Flash a quick rinse, feed them, feed myself, watch a little TV, fall asleep in my chair, but now I'm heading to my shower and bed. A productive though tiring day! Good night, my darlin'! Love you!

Monday, September 9, 2024 – Travel Day to Charleston, TN

Pix to come.

Hi Darlin'!
A good night sleep, a fairly easy final pack up, and other than taking down the paddock fence and cleaning up that area, everything went smoothly. Got out a bit after 9:00. I was a bit worried the park guys might come along and ask what I was still doing there, since the entire area is completely barren except for the porta-potties, but one drove by and didn't stop, so it was all good. Most the google maps directions had me going cross country, and it was definitely shorter mileage-wise, but I wasn't about to go over those hills with this trailer at the moment, so we stuck to the freeways, going west on I-40 and south on I-75, which actually got me there at just about the same time, right at 12:30. I'm spending the week with my friend Linda, who always takes such good care of me when I camp down at Lost Corral, but she invited me to stay at her place, which is probably easier for her than picking me up down there, and definitely nice for me and the whole family. I get electrice and water, my horses get a huge green pasture, and Lola gets to be free and has other dogs to keep her company. Got in position next to the barn very easily, and got hooked up with everything in no time. Linda and I sat and chatted for awhile, then I got busy doing housework and laundry, since I'd let it all go during the ride week. Did some computer work, finally settled down for the evening to dinner, and was finally able to watch an hour of TV! The signal isn't great here, but it's certainly better than what I've had the last couple of weeks, and good enough for live streaming, so I'm a happy camper! I might even be able to load up some of the pictures I haven't been able to get up before! Anyway, I've got an early morning, so I'm heading to shower and bed nice and early, too. Good night, sweetie! Love you!

Saturday, September 7, 2024 – Final Busy Day of the Event

Pix to come.

Hey Babe,
Finally had a good night sleep, maybe that double dose of Sleepytime tea, or maybe just my sheer exhaustion, finally did the job! I was glad of it, too, since we had a very busy day. I helped a bit with breakfast, then there was a long break when the bulk of folks went to an away vet check, then I actually got to go out and pick up some ribbons on a short stretch of trail that was just perfect for a little ride on Apollo, just two miles out and two back. There were a couple of nice grades he had to climb, so he got some exercise, though I got the impression he wanted to keep going when I asked him to turn around! Then we got busy prepping for dinner, spaghetti, salad and garlic toast, and we were pretty much nonstop until after 7:00 when the awards ceremony started. I did some cleaning, then came back and fed the horses and walked Lola, went back and really couldn't do much, since I didn't know where anything got stored, so I came back to do a little more cleaning in the trailer. They needed two bags of chopped onions, so I got out my old kitchen machine, which I haven't used in ages, and chopped them all in no time, but it did get the trailer a bit smelly. No worries, I'll spray some air freshener before I get in the shower, which won't be long! I'm making some more Sleepytime and looking forward to getting up a little later to take down ribbons, and a nice ride on Flash in the process! Good night, my darlin'! Love you!
