Wednesday, October 6, 2021 – Another Leisurely Day

Hi Darlin’!
Even though I put my earplugs in last night, there was so much hard rain that it woke me up a couple of times it was beating so hard on the roof! It seemed to rain practically all night, and I heard later that we had nearly five inches! Everything is soggy, but it seemed to drain away pretty, though it was muddy all around. A tree came down on the other side of the loop, right across the road, so I called the office and they sent someone out to chop enough of it off the road so cars can get around it. Was surprised when the young sawyer actually got his chainsaw stuck at one point, it took us fifteen minutes to get it unstuck. I helped move the limbs and trunk sections out of the way, but he didn’t really cut much up except what was right on the road. I think we moved enough for me get past it, the road is pretty narrow right there, with trees on both sides, but I think it will be okay. Naturally, though, it’s way too wet to even attempt to go riding. I let the horses loose, though, so they could get some exercise. Poor Apollo, I’ve yet to ride him here! I was thinking about doing it tomorrow, but then I got a message from one of the women I rode with on Saturday saying she’s going to take a 15-mile road ride tomorrow and asked me to come, so it will be Flash again tomorrow. I also had Kari come by with Hal and a boxed dinner from a local barbecue place, which was really sweet of her! They kept me company for awhile, and we worked out the details of our riding plans for the weekend. Once this front finishes going through overnight, it’s supposed to be nice the rest of the weekend and into next week, fingers crossed! Read and watched TV pretty much the rest of the day, now I’m ready for shower and bed. Good night, babe! Love you!

Tuesday, October 5, 2021 – Hay and Mail Day

Hi Babe!
Woke up early and well-rested, got my chores and breakfast done, then headed into town, first stopping at the post office to get my two packages, plus send out a package as well. From there I went to pick up some hay just north of town, very big bales, though loosely strung so I had to be very careful stacking it or the bale would fall apart. Roger only charged my $4 a bale, which is the best price I’ve gotten in a while, plus he threw in an extra bale, so it was a good deal. Unfortunately, the weather forecast mistimed the rain coming in, again, and I hit a couple of brief but heavy showers just before getting back to camp, darn it. I left it out in the sun for awhile, and finally got it stored away, I’m hoping it didn’t get so wet as to get moldy, fingers crossed. Of course, it will all get used up in the next couple of weeks, so it should be all right. Traded in that propane tank that expires in December for a refurbished one from Walmart, and tried to find a spare quart of oil, but evidently there’s a Rotella shortage for some reason. Anyway, heavy rain moved in later in the day, so I just had another leisurely TV binge-watching day. And that’s all the news that’s fit to print! Good night, sweetness! Love you!

Monday, October 4, 2021 – Leisurely Day

Hi Babe!
Ended up getting to bed late, but had a good night sleep. My one and only neighbor left pretty early this morning while it was still foggy out, and finally, we had the place to ourselves! Just the way I like it. My first chore after feeding the horses and putting them out to graze was to solve a leveling problem. Last night when I went to close the trailer door, it got caught on the stairs, which it hadn’t done here before, but I remembered noticing that the jack stanchion on that side had sunk into the ground (along with the board I had it sitting on), so I jacked the trailer back up, hooked it up to the truck and raised the jacks up. Fortunately, there is a pile of gravel nearby, so I got out my big manure shovel and got some of the gravel and filled in the hole and then some, put down a second board, and raised the trailer back up again. I had breakfast after than, then did a couple of other odd jobs before settling down to read for awhile. Then I did some mending. On one of our recent trips, I left too much slack in Apollo’s lead rope when I tied him into the trailer and he managed to knock over a feed bin, munch a bunch, then started tearing into the bag that holds the patio rug and ripped that up as if it were a feed bag, so I mended that, as well as the pocket in my down vest (or should I say, YOUR down vest which I have now inherited). Went back to reading, then eventually binge TV, so a leisurely day, to say the least. When it was supper time, I had to loosen up the anchor that Apollo was on, it had gotten stuck on one of the posts, and after I did that, he went galloping across the campground heading for his hay on the line, hardly noticing the anchors flopping along behind him! Funny horse! Finally settled down for the evening, grilling a beautiful thick, bacon-wrapped sirloin that was really nice. Getting close to shower and bed time, so I’ll say good night now. Love you, darlin’!

Sunday, October 3, 2021 – Rainy Sunday

Hi Darlin’!
Had a great night sleep, though some rained moved in during the night, but I didn’t hear it because my earplugs were in. By the time I got up this morning, pretty much all of the non-horse campers were gone. A few day riders came in, and a group left about the time I was having breakfast, all slickered up and leaving in the rain. Just after they left, it started to come down pretty good, and a half hour later, there was a torrential downpour! As I’ve said, I’m a fair weather rider, and it would either have to be an emergency with someone’s life at stake, or a big paycheck at the end for me to ride in that kind of weather! Unless it’s a linear ride where I had no choice, like a cattle drive, of course! It basically rained almost all day, finally clearing up a little in the late afternoon, but even then it stayed cloudy. I spent part of the day doing some cleanup, the counter and dining room table area needed some serious reorganizing, and it took me nearly three hours just to do those two small areas! It does look a bit better now, I just don’t quite have enough storage space for everything, so I’m having to do some rethinking on how to get organized. I have a few ideas, but I’ll have to see if they pan out. Meanwhile, the rest of the day was reading and binge-watching an Australian series called Offspring, which has been somewhat entertaining. The rain has finally stopped for now, and I’m ready for shower and bed. Good night, sweetie! Love you!

Saturday, October 2, 2021 – Gorgeous Ride with the Locals

Hey Sweetie!
Well, my network paid off big-time today! Although we didn’t go exactly where we planned… Kari arrived and said she had spoken with a couple of friends who were already planning on riding out of my campground today, and would it be okay if we joined them and rode Pine Torch later in the week? Of course I said yes, and it turned out to be a great ride! Pam and Laurie really knew the renegade trails here, and we had a lovely, nearly 13 mile ride, some of it at a fabulous Walker-gait pace, which was no problem for Flash to keep up with. We switched between leaders and being in back throughout the ride with very few problems, though Flash did get kicked once because he kept sticking his nose in the tail of the horse in front, so he got what he deserved! Not being a “beer ride,” we did a lot less stopping, though we did take a couple of breaks, but there are several nice picnic areas set up along the trails, so we had no problem finding a place to stop. Flash did very well, as always, though he lost one of his boots a couple of times, and the final time I just left it off since we were almost back to camp. They took me to several out of the way places, including a great cave with a waterfall they call the “shelter.” Apparently there are a lot more of them than are visible from the orange trail. We also did some fast gaiting along the road a few times, also wonderful! Anyway, it was a fabulous day of riding, a little warm but much cooler in the woods, a bit humid because there’s a front moving in that’s bringing rain and hopefully slightly cooler temperatures tomorrow. You know me, I never mind a rainy Sunday, makes me relax, though there is some housekeeping I want to do, just a bunch of stuff that needs to be put away. So I’m spending the evening reading and watching TV, and it won’t be long before I’m off to shower and bed. Good night, babe! Love you!

Friday, October 1, 2021 – Shopping Day

Hey Babe,
A great night sleep, did my chores, then headed out to do a big shopping day today. I haven’t been in awhile, so I had a lot to stock up on. First stop was Tractor Supply, but unfortunately they don’t do propane refills at the Moulton location, so they recommended I go to the Coop. Ridiculously expensive though! They stopped filling at four gallons (I’ve never had ANYONE stop before at least 4.2. and usually I get up to 4.7 or 4.8!) Guy there claimed it was the law they had to stop at 4! Plus it cost me over $18, which several dollars more than I usually pay for a FULL tank! Well, I’m not going THERE again! Only good thing that came out of that was they had some nice hats, and I found a nice green mesh one that looks like an Aussie jungle hat with a nice shape, and I needed one, so I bought that. Then I had a good long shop at Walmart, then a stop at Marathon for diesel, it was actually cheaper than at Walmart, a quick stop at a beer store, though they still didn’t have my Yeungling’s Black and Tan, but at least they had Modelo Negra, so I bought some of that. Hot weather always makes me want to have beer, and I haven’t had any in months, so I was glad to get something. Got back to camp, unpacked everything, then… had a beer! Settled down for the rest of the day, but did manage to line up a riding buddy for tomorrow, someone who can trailer us over to the west Pine Torch loop for a ride. She was recommended by my Facebook group network, so I guess that’s a good place to find help when I need it! Anyway, I’ve had a relaxing evening, probably ate too much but will hopefully burn it off tomorrow. Heading for shower and bed now. Good night, my darlin! Love you!

Thursday, September 30, 2021 – 15.5 Mile Ride at Owl Creek

Hi Darlin’,
Had a fabulous night sleep last night, woke up nice and refreshed, did my chores, and it wasn’t long before I was saddling up Flash for his first ride here. Last time when we were here together, we did the orange loop twice, going in opposite directions, which is a little over eight miles long. Today I wanted to add the smaller blue loop in the middle, which the maps says is only about 2.5 miles long, so I figured about 10-12 miles with the added terrain. Turns out that it’s more than 15.5 miles long, so it was a much longer ride than I had anticipated. Still, it was a very good ride, and Flash did an excellent job. I met some other day riders resting down at that nice picnic area by the bridge, but only stay for a moment to adjust a stirrup, then I was off on the blue loop trail. A really nice ride, though. It reminds me of Big South Fork or Hocking Hills, without the mud and the long stretches of slippery rock, though there were a couple of short instances of both here. I had forgotten how nice this forest is in places, with lots of caves and little waterfalls, though most of the trail is well-built so that it traverses along the middle of hills as they curve around, rather than trying to go up and down them all the time. Still some nice grades, though. I ran into a local woman out riding, too, on a pretty paint horse with one blue eye. We chatted a bit, but I never got her name. Anyway, it took longer than I had planned, so by the time I got back to camp, I didn’t have time to go do the shopping like I had hoped I would be able to do, so that chore is now pushed off to tomorrow. It’s probably better anyway, it was a long day, I’ll need to recover tomorrow! Oh, my neighbor from the last two days left this morning, we chatted briefly, and when I got back to camp, all the day rider trailers were gone, so I was hoping to have the place to myself tonight, but another camper came in, though he doesn’t have a horse, and then long after dark, yet another trailer came in, too dark to see who it is, though. Guess it will be next week before we finally get the place to ourselves, though I did let the horses graze free for awhile before the first camper got here. Settled down with a movie with dinner, one more French lesson, now I’m ready for shower and bed! Love you, sweetie! Good night!

Wednesday, September 29, 2021 – Laundry and Work Day

Hi Sweetie!
Had a good night sleep, then immediately started in on laundry, it was a gorgeous day to hang stuff outside, and start work on my computer. I had all the followup work from the Workshop to do, you know, Thank You notes, Certificates etc. I’m very glad I uploaded the videos last week, though, because the cell phone signal is very iffy here, I have to put the phone up in the bedroom on the west side in order to get a decent enough signal to do anything, even Netflix, but it’s tricky. I also had a couple of months worth of bookkeeping to do, though I hadn’t realized I was that far behind. Anyway, it took be pretty much all day to do that, so riding was not in the cards today, which is fine, it’s good to let the horses rest. I put Apollo out on his anchor and Flash was loose for awhile, at least while my neighbor was out riding, but when he got back I hooked Flash back up to the highline. In the afternoon, his horse, named Lucy, broke her line and came trotting back towards me, then seemed to head towards the woods until she hit the treeline, at which point she stopped to graze. I managed to get close enough to put a lead rope on her when her owner showed up and took her home. I was in the middle of grilling one of my last Zweigler’s white hots on the grill, so I had to turn that off to rescue her, or it would have burnt to a crisp. Wouldn’t want to do that with such a valuable commodity! (you have to be from western NY to understand that!) Anyway, finally settled down for a quiet evening, glad to be on Central time, where it gets dark around 7:00, much more to my liking, though that will change when the clocks change in a few weeks. Had a great, long shower, going to be on fresh sheets, looking forward to it! Good night, babe! Love you!

Tuesday, September 28, 2021 – Tough Travel Day to Owl Creek

Hi Babe,
Happy to say I had a great night sleep last night, at least eight full hours with only one short wake up around 4:00, but went right back to sleep. I needed it! So I woke up refreshed, got up and gave the horses their feedbags and fed Lola, then saddled up Flash and ponied Apollo over to the vet’s next door. We waited around for a bit, but the horses were happy to eat the grass, so no worries. They finally came out the back door and did their thing, it seems the Doc has someone in training so most of the conversation was directed at her rather than me, but it didn’t take long. What took a long time was them getting the paperwork done on Global Vet Link for my EECVI. They had to call to get an exception because my mailing address is now Florida, and they were saying it had to be a Florida vet issuing the certification. Really? If I need a certificate to get into Florida, how am I supposed to get a Florida vet to issue it? Anyway, the issue was resolved after awhile, and eventually I was able to ride back and finish packing up and loading. I managed to get out right around 11:00, later than I had hoped but still okay. I didn’t follow my GPS because it wanted me to go across country, which I knew had some narrow roads, so I followed 64 all the way to I-65 and took that most of the way. Then I made a mistake, because it was trying to get me down a narrow road, and I opted out, going on another road, which ended up being a mistake. It took awhile to fix, and before I finished, my phone died and I ended up having to ask for directions, but no one seemed to be able to give me anything definitive. I kept going to where I thought I needed to go, and voila! Suddenly I was passing a sign for a turn to Owl Creek, which I recognized, but miles from where people were telling me to go. Never ask the locals for directions, that seems to be the best advice. I had forgotten it was two miles on narrow gravel road to get to it, but fortunately, I didn’t meet anyone on the road. Anyway, I finally made it, then I had another problem. When I tried to back into the spot I had decided I wanted to take, my tires started slipping and I couldn’t move. The ground looked pretty dry, but not dry enough for my weight, I guess, even after I took the horses out of the trailer. So I had to unhook, then come in sideways and re-hook, which allowed me to move again. I did some more reconnoitering because I didn’t really like that spot anyway (it meant I was facing the bathrooms), so I finally settled on a spot just behind the bathrooms, but facing the horses. The water is very nearby, I used two trees instead of the provided highlines, and finally got the horses on those, fed and watered, all tanks and even Lola’s swimming pool filled up with water, at which point it was 5:00! I was supposed to get here just after 2:00, but with all those other complications, things just got a bit out of hand. Anyway, I managed to get out my chairs and my barbecue grill, and since I hadn’t had anything except a couple of protein bars to eat today, I grilled up a piece of chicken and the last ear of corn I had from Michigan, then settled down for the evening. There is one other camper here, much to my surprise, but I haven’t met them yet (or it could be just a him, I only saw one horse). He came back from a ride just as I was settling in, I’m sure I’ll meet him tomorrow. Watched a movie, now I’m ready for shower and bed. I got hot and sweaty today, temps in the low 80’s, but it’s supposed to get down to 60 overnight, so I’m hoping for another good night sleep, especially after this tiring day! Good night, darlin’! Love you!

Monday, September 27, 2021 – Travel Day to Vet in TN

Hi Darlin’,
Had a terrible night sleep, couldn’t doze off for the life of me last night! I tried everything, nothing worked. It was probably past 2:30 when I finally slept, but the alarm was set for 7:30, so it wasn’t much sleep. Don’t know why! Anyway, finally got up and finished off the packing, got the horses loaded in the I was just dropping the trailer back down onto the hitch ball when the old guy that’s a volunteer here came by, so I was temporarily delayed, though not for too long, fortunately. I still managed to get moving and left the dump around 9:15. It’s such a straight shot today, what with I-65 being about a mile from the park, then straight down to I-24 in TN. We made one stop at a Marathon just before crossing out of KY to pick up fuel. I thought it was a bargain price at $3.14 considering they were getting $3.45 at the Flying J across the street, but much to my surprise, it actually turned out to be a bit cheaper in TN, as low as $2.99! KY must have added some gas tax or something, because they ALWAYS used to be cheaper than in TN, but not anymore! Anyway, I made such good time, and with the time change, I ended up arriving at the vet’s office at around 1:30 local time. I parked where I was told, next door, then walked over to see if they could put the horses up in their multi-acre pasture, and though it took nearly half an hour, the answer was no, darn it! So I had to walk back over and rig up a picket line between a chain link fence and an electrical post (I can’t call it a highline because it’s too darn low for that!), and managed to get the horses settled in. I didn’t have a lot of water in my tank, I had considered putting some in this morning but didn’t want to take the time, so naturally, Apollo knocked over the water bucket and I didn’t have enough to refill it. Fortunately, there was a water spigot right next to the cement pad that I had parked on, and even though the water was apparently turned off, there was a tiny trickle, so I hooked up to it and ran a hose to the water bucket, and left it for a couple of hours, which was enough to fill the bucket about half way. I’m keeping it on overnight just so they don’t run out, though they’ve both had a good drink now. Anyway, once I got them settled, I watched am movie, now I’m headed to shower and bed (I have just enough in my trailer tank for that), even though it’s only 9:30 local time. I need the zzzzz’s! Good night, sweetie! Love you!
