Monday, Feb. 18, 2019 – Happy Hour with Cathy During Dialysis

Last month during dialysis I met a woman named Cathy whose husband was suffering from a sudden onset of kidney failure, and she was interested in hearing more about my experience with home dialysis, so after we got our husbands set up in-center, we headed over to Carson’s Tavern nearby, where we sat outside with Lola and enjoy a nice nosh and a Guinness on tap and chatted all about dialysis and other life stories. It was a nice way to pass the time, and she seemed to appreciate the information, which I was happy to share. Another late evening though, as Hubby’s 3:00 chair time means we don’t usually get home before 8:00, just in time for mosquito hour and getting eaten alive while putting away and feeding the horses. Looking forward to getting back to home hemodialysis, and saving myself two hours of driving 3 days a week!

Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019 – Short Tune-up Ride on Flash

Having put so many miles on Flash last week, and because he had a little bit of a swollen ankle, I decided to just take him on a short tune-up ride, a nice 5-mile loop through the Hungryland WMA, beginning by going up the Indiantown Grade about a mile, then north along another grade, waded through some water to another grade, headed east to the Ranch Colony canal, then south back home. A very nice 5 mile ride that will be perfect to do with Hubby next time he’s feeling up to it. I am really enjoying spending all this quality time with Flash, he is getting better and better at everything! He listens well, he’s having no trouble wading through water anymore (we spent a day crossing a shallow canal because I know there’s at least one water crossing on the OTL trail, as we go into the southwest side of Jonathon Dickinson State Park on the last day of the ride, and he soon powered through that new experience), and he’s just fast becoming the perfect trail horse!

Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 – Just 5 Miles with Brother Jeff-Frost Misbehaves

Brother Jeff was ready for a ride today, so I saddled up Apollo rather than Flash, as he and Jeff’s horse (well, his boarder’s horse) Frost have about the same slow quarter horse walk, and it’s a bit frustrating trying to slow Flash down to Frost’s level. Jeff won’t go any faster than a slow walk, so I figured it would be easier on Apollo. As it turned out, it didn’t really matter, as Frost wasn’t really interested in going on a ride anyway. We went into the neighborhood east for a few blocks, then when we went to turn south on the canal, Frost was having none of it. Apollo, having not been ridden by me in some time, also gave me a bit of trouble, but I managed to separate him and keep going. Jeff wasn’t able to get Frost back in line, so I carried on, figuring we’d meet up again a bit later, and I wasn’t about to let Apollo learn any bad habits from Frost, so we kept going. I took Apollo a couple of miles around the neighborhood before heading home, only to find Jeff hadn’t gotten back yet. I called him and discovered he was on foot, leading Frost back home from a few blocks away, so I went and caught up with him. Evidently, Frost just got too ornery and Jeff felt it safer just to get down, thus the walking. Not quite the ride we were hoping for, but at least we got a little ride in today.

Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 – Another 8.25 Miles on the Indiantown Grade

Decided to just take a relatively short ride today, along the Indiantown Grade to Pratt-Whitney Road and back, which I knew to be just over 8 miles, just to keep up Flash’s conditioning. Another boring ride, but, as I’ve said many times before, no hour on the back of my horse is bad!

Thurs. Feb. 14 2019 – Another 17 Miles Under our Belt

Back on the trail again, Flash and I added another 17+ miles to our workout schedule. While we started on one of our usual treks, out Cypress Creek east to Riverbend and south along the canal, today I decided to explore a different canal, one where there's a pedestrian bridge to a road, then a canal at the back of those houses on that road. That took us a long way west, until we came to a fence that completely blocked the trail along the canal (I didn't think they were allowed to do that, but it had obviously been there a long time), so we had to backtrack a block, then go north until we found another road that would get us farther west. Eventually we made our way to the crossover at the south end of the canal toward home, and made our way north from there. Another great ride, and Flash is getting really fit! Me, too!

Wed. Feb. 13, 2019 – Euchre and Dialysis

Another day off to Stuart for Hubby's in-center dialysis, with me heading over to the community center for another rousing two hours of euchre!

Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019 – Almost 13 Miles of Workout

Knowing that we had to be prepared to do three straight days of long mileage, I decided we were ready to do at least two days in a row of moderate length riding, and after having done 14+ miles yesterday, we took another 13+ miles today, again exploring some new territory to try to make it more interesting. Today we headed back out on Indiantown grade, this time cutting north after about a mile, then crossing east back along a canal all the way back to where the OTL trail comes out of the north end of Cypress Creek. We had a bit of trouble at that intersection, as there was only the narrowest of passes by the locked gate, not really a horse gate for some reason, so I had to get down and squeeze Flash through it. Not sure fat Apollo would have even fitted! Guess I'll have to find out if the other side of the canal has better access somewhere. There were a few hiking trails going into Cypress Trails before I hit the end of the canal, so we'll have to explore that next time to see if there's a way around that gate that's easier. South from there until we came to the Cypress Trails parking lot, then straight west home again. Another nice ride, though Flash was, understandably, a bit less excited about going for a ride this morning. Willing once we got started, but it took a bit to get him going at first. We have to do it, though, to build the stamina we're both going to need for the OTL ride!

Monday, Feb. 11, 2019 – Explored 14+ Miles of (Mostly) New Trail

Decided we needed to find a new route today, something to keep our rides fresh and interesting (as much as it can be in flat Florida!) We headed west on the Indiantown grade, this time crossing over Pratt-Whitney road (though I smashed my leg a bit on the horse gate, it's kind of narrow at that trailhead, so I'm anticipating a bruise!), and kept going west until we hit a road along a (guess what?), canal. We followed that back around until it swung back toward Pratt-Whitney, tried to take a water-logged trail south but didn't make it, so we had to turn around and cross PW, ride along the side of the road (fortunately there's a wide swale so we could stay well off the road) back down to the grade, then back home again. At least it was more interesting than what we've been doing lately!

Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019 – Another 18+ Mile Ride

As I continue to train up Flash for the upcoming 63-mile, 3-day Ocean-to-Lake Trail Ride at the end of the month, we posted another 18+ mile ride around The Farms (Jupiter Farms, that is), heading out through Cypress Creek Natural Area, through the Critter Tunnel under Indiantown Road, south through Riverbend Park, along the canal on the north side of the Loxahatchee Slough west along the canal until we turned north again toward home. A nice big loop, perfect for the training we're doing, though a bit boring as it is long and straight and mostly follows canals. Flash did beautifully as usual, though!

Wed., Feb. 6, 2019 – Euchre and Dialysis

Dropped a book order off at the mailbox, got some For Sale signs for the old travel trailer ready until I couldn’t find any staples for the staple gun, dropped Hubby off at the dialysis center, went to my weekly Euchre game, picked up a few things at the Walmart, then headed back to the dialysis center to wait for Hubby. Managed to get caught up on the blog while I waited. It seems I keep getting behind, no matter how hard I try, things just get in the way! I’ll keep trying, though!
