Thursday, July 16, 2015 – Otter Creek Ride with Marsha and Brandy

SAM_3826

Marsha and Nate went out in the buggy for a while today, evidently he was able to make some repairs on his tires, but by the time they got back it was flat again. Not to be deterred, Marsha still asked if I wanted to go for a ride, and even though it was almost 4:00, I said Yes! After testing Nate's Turner saddle, I decided it was too slippery and uncomfortable, despite the gel seat, and put my saddle on instead. Although Brandy had a hugely narrower barrel, it seemed to fit fine, I just had to wrap the cinch strap around a couple of extra times, and off we went! Brandy is a retired pacer, so her walk isn't too bad, and she was able to keep up with his gaited buddy Willy pretty well, and occasionally we got into a "pace" which was a bit rough, but after awhile I was able to get him to slow down enough to make it about the same as my Apollo's slow jog. A couple of times going uphill, we even cantered, and his canter was really beautiful, nice and smooth and easy. I decided that we needed to do more often if we get a chance to ride again. We just went around Shady Trail, so it was barely an hour that we were out, but it was very nice, a lot quicker pace than what I usually get with Hubby, and through some of the narrow trees it seemed like we were going at a dangerously quick pace, but I'm sure that was just because I'm not used to the gaiters. Anyway, we had a nice ride, it was good to get experience on another horse, and after helping Marsha put the horses away and having a drink with her, I came back and settled back down for the evening with Hubby.

Wednesday, July 15, 2015 – More Writing and Water

Spent most of the day doing some writing, though I also cut Roy’s hair, which was LONG overdue, then with the help of our neighbor Marsha, put some water in our tank and hers, while several more trailers, two from Canada and one from Florida, joined us on our loop. Had conversations with everyone throughout the day. Marsha’s husband’s sulky blew out a wheel yesterday, and I helped her look for a replacement, to no avail, but she suggested that since the buggy was in operable, that maybe we could go for a ride on her two horses, since they are as inseparable as our two, and since Apollo’s back is hurt (he flinched a lot less when I touched it today, so he’s definitely getting better, but still needs to rest it, though I think it’s only bruised), I thought that was a great idea. Sat in our loungechairs and watched the world go by during cocktail hour, before settling down for the evening.

Tuesday, July 14, 2015 – Writing, with a Strange Start to the Day

As soon as I got up this morning and looked outside, something was wrong. Apollo was standing on the opposite side of the tie rail, on the outside of the stall. Upon closer examination, it became clear that somehow he got underneath the rail. He had a long scratch along the top of his back, and tufts of his hair were stuck on the bottom of the rail. I can only think he either laid down and then got up wrong, or was reaching so far for grass that is a yard or more away, that he jammed himself underneath. I cleaned the wound and sprayed it well with Vetericyn, and hoped for the best. He didn’t seem to have any other injuries, so I’ve got my fingers crossed. Meanwhile, we had a slow day, though I got a lot of essential writing done, thank goodness. When we fed the horses in the evening, when I touched Apollo’s back and he flinched badly. I examined him a bit more, and he only flinched on one particular point, though it wasn’t from the abrasion, it seemed more along the spine. I’m hoping it’s just a bruise, but we’ll look at it more closely over the next few days. Don’t think we’ll be doing any riding until he shows remarkable improvement. I sure don’t want to slap a saddle on a sore back! Settled down for the evening, with hopes for his improvement tomorrow!

Monday, July 13, 2015 – Runaround Day

After having a nice restful day yesterday, after breakfast today, we took a ride into Glenville to pick up my mail that had been forwarded, then Lowville for shopping at Tractor Supply, Walmart, and a quick lunch at a Chinese restaurant, mediocre but it did the job, got gas for the generator, and threw out an old vacuum cleaner that died on us and which we replaced today.

Saturday, July 11, 2015 – Another Great Ride along Independence River

After a nice slow start to the day, we saddled up again, and also put on boots, since my previous notes described our planned route as having some stony sections, before heading out at around 1:00. We headed out past the bathhouse to the aptly named Shady Trail, which was absolutely beautiful, then on to Independence River Trail, where eventually it did get rocky, then down Hiawatha trail till we finally reached Confusion Flats and the Blue Jog Road home. The dogs were brilliant again, with Lola even waiting for us at a road crossing, and Billy doing a fine job of keeping up, though we did have to slow down a bit after our several canters to allow him to catch up. Absolutely gorgeous day, temps in upper 70's, so a little cooler in the shade, just PERFECT! These are definitely perfect days, we couldn't ask for anything more. Despite all the rain in the area this spring and summer, there were only a few muddy spots, and the mud here is so different than down in Watkins Glen, the sand base makes it crumble under the horses' feet, rather than suck it in and hold onto it. Didn't lose any boots, thank goodness, and truly enjoyed the day. Could not have asked for more! Perfect trails, perfect weather, perfect horses, perfect companions, everything just perfect! I love this place! Definitely in my top 10, maybe even my top 5! Love it! Got back about 3:30, then settled down to watch a couple of movies for the afternoon and evening. Life is good!

Friday, July 10, 2015 – First Ride Day at Otter Creek

Well, everything I remember about this place from our last trip here is true. The trails are wonderful! Hubby just wanted to take a short ride today, so I planned a loop about 5.25 miles long, and we took the dogs with us. The roads that I remember being sandy were still sandy, but with all the rain, it was pretty well packed, so we weren't sinking anywhere near as deep as I remember we had before. Once on the trails, despite the rain, the dirt was hardly muddy at all, and even in the few places where it was, it was never more than half a hoof deep, so it was wonderful! We got lots of trots and canters in when we were on the wider trails and roads, and some lovely walks and jogs on the narrow trails, of which there were many. Gorgeous! Mostly pine forest, with a few areas that deciduous and some were more open. Really enjoyed it! The dogs came along as well, and they just keep getting better and better. Lola listened to me as we approached the one road we had to cross, and we made it all safe and sound to the other side. Got back before 2:30, had a light lunch, and spent the afternoon reading (Hubby) and writing (me) and napping (the dogs, and Hubby). Fish for dinner tonight, freshly caught two days ago!

Thursday, July 9, 2015 – Travel to Otter Creek Horse Camp

Woke up around 8:00 and started getting ready to leave. Steve fixed another nice breakfast for us, and we were soon parting ways. We had a little trouble getting out of the loop, it was pretty narrow and I had to take a couple of stabs at it, but finally we made the corner and were heading up the road. It was only about a 90 minute drive on back roads to our next horse camp, Otter Creek, or actually, Independence River State Forest. Made one wrong turn, only because my GPS wanted to bring us in the south side instead of the north side, but we got back on track before we got into any trouble. Arrived at the campground and checked out all three loops, looking for a spot where Hubby thought he could get a satellite signal. Despite being a Thursday, the camp was about 40% full already, evidently some folks came for the 4th of July and stayed on. We managed to find the perfect spot in the first loop. We returned to the only water spigot with actual threads on it and filled up the freshwater tank before settling in, and we're close enough so that if we need to fill it again, we have enough hose to reach it, thank goodness. There's a closer spigot to the horses, but without threads, so it will be a bucket brigade for them. Got everyone settled in, and even got the satellite dish up in no time! Hubby was right about the angle, so now we're all happy campers! We were completely settled in by about 2:30 or so, really nice to get in this early. I spent some time in the afternoon writing, then grilled a London Broil I had started marinating yesterday afternoon for a lovely dinner, and settled down for the night.

Wednesday, July 8, 2015 – Visit with Friend

Had a nice breakfast with the family, then they went up on the roof to do the work they had planned for the week, while Hubby stayed in the RV and read, and I snuck down to the nearby little lake and went fishing. I still had some worms that I dug up last week, but I started out with a floating lure, then decided to try the crawfish my new friend at Watkins Glen had given me, and wouldn't you know, I got it snagged on a submerged tree on the very first cast, darn it! I decided I didn't want to lose it (I had tried to buy more at Walmart yesterday, but they couldn't find a price for it, and I wasn't about to wait 10 minutes for them to find one, as late as we already were running), so first I stripped of my socks and jeans, then realizing it was still too deep, I came back and took off my underwear, still too deep, came back and stripped off my shirt, now skinny-dipping! Thank goodness there was no one else around (not for my sake, for theirs!). Anyway, I had to duck underwater to get it unhooked, but I managed to release it, yeah!! Crawfish saved! I promptly put that back in the tackle box for another day when there wasn't so much windrow along the edge of the water. Then I finally went to worms and a bobber, and started catching sunfish like crazy. The first one was too small and I put it back, but they kept getting bigger and bigger, so in less than two hours (and in between throwing the ball for Lola) I had caught 7 large and medium sunfish, my best haul since I re-started fishing! Not THAT'S what I'm talking about! Just before I was getting ready to come home, friend Steve hand-delivered a cheeseburger to me! How sweet! Shortly after I finished it, I brought home my booty, beheaded and cleaned them, saving the filleting until just before I cook them. Everyone was duly impressed! After their work was done, we had another great dinner, then played some poker, and even Hubby, who HATES cards, joined in, and even won some hands! Remarkable! Now if I can just get him to play Euchre! A very enjoyable day all around!

Tuesday, July 7, 2015 – Travel Day to Friend’s Cabin

We had a busy travel day scheduled today, and got off to a slow start when we discovered a flat tire on the RV. Hubby pumped it with air, but then discovered it was out of round, really bulging on one side. Since we didn’t want another blowout, especially after just finally getting the last damage from a blowout on the RV fixed a few weeks ago, we decided the safest thing was to put the spare on, which we did, making us more than a half hour later leaving camp than we expected. I found a tire place in Ithaca that had the right size in stock, so our first stop was there. Unfortunately, they were so backed up, the only service they could do fast was to mount the new tire on the wheel. Anything more, like mounting it on the trailer, couldn’t be done before 3:00, so we skipped it, tucked the new tire in the spare tire rack underneath, and vowed to change it out the first chance we got. Another half hour plus behind, now, we carried on, then discovered both a Tractor Supply, where we stopped for propane, and a Walmart, where we stopped for groceries, and finally stopped at a misnamed Liquor “warehouse” which was a tiny store in a strip center with almost no choice of brandy, not a single VSOP, much less an XO! Undeterred, we finally heading up the highway towards Camden, where my old high school buddy Steve had a cabin. He just happened to be there this week, so we decided to visit on our way to Otter Creek. Arrived just after 5:00, he was waiting for us at the end of his driveway to shuffle us in, and we were soon settled in, with the horses on a highline and us parked in a rather narrow loop in his driveway that proved challenging to maneuver, but we managed, as always. Enjoyed a lovely evening with him and his girlfriend, her two daughters, and another friend of Steve’s, including smores over a campfire, just before it got washed out with a sudden rainstorm! We sat on the covered porch the rest of the evening, getting caught up on all the latest. Too many mosquitos, though! We all got bit like crazy!

Monday, July 6, 2015 – Cleaning and Prep Day

Spent the day finishing off laundry and cleaning house, as we prepared to leave tomorrow.
